Alliance Government Relations
- March 1, 2010

By Steve Dust, President/CEO, Greater Cedar Valley Alliance

The business advocacy role of the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance is taken very seriously. Recently, I wrote a summary of the Alliance's annual legislative forum that was addressed and emailed only to our investor/members in the Cedar Valley. In the summary, I expressed disappointment in some of the positions taken by legislators that supported initiatives such as imposing a prevailing wage, attacks on Iowa’s Right to Work via Fair Share (now called “reasonable reimbursement”) and “choice of doctor” proposals. These proposals increase costs to business and business owners, and working taxpayers in general. Not only that, they make Iowa's business climate less hospitable to those who consider our area and state for their businesses or who are now doing business here.

In my “comments” portion of the summary, I crossed a line from issue advocacy to my opinion on the current state of organized labor. I regret that. My committment to you in the future is to remain "on issue."

I know we won't agree with those who represent or work for unions on some issues - a few are listed above - we do agree on many items. We need economic development tools that permit the Cedar Valley to compete effectively for capital investment. We need new jobs that pay well. We need educational systems that are top-notch at all levels. We need impressive quality of life features are required to attract businesses and talented people. And we all agree that everyone should have access to the jobs and opportunities in the Cedar Valley of Iowa.

Look for Email Updates:
By the time this edition is published, the legislature will be well past the February 12th "funnel date," when bills not yet approved by most committees can no longer reach the floor for debate. Therefore, we aren't going to include an update here. Rather, Alliance Government Relations Director Steve Firman has been providing updates by e-newsletter, and there is additional information at www.cedarvalleyalliance.com at the Government Relations tab.

A Government Relations guiding statement: The Greater Cedar Valley Alliance is a pro-growth, business advocacy organization. We believe that businesses invest in the Alliance and our related organizations to obtain services that help their business to prosper. When your business prospers, you hire talented people. With increased success, your business will invest in people, technology, and facilities. With those investments, the tax base increases, and governments can lower tax rates.

We advocate for business success, regardless of size of the business, and economic growth, in the Cedar Valley of Iowa. We advocate for business and individual earnings to stay in the private sector to be spent or invested as risk takers and wage earners see fit. We believe strongly that individuals have the right to free association. We work to ensure those who are imposing new or increased restriction on your business or individual freedom understand the impact of such action on the Cedar Valley or Iowa as a place to live and do business.

And, we encourage the growth and health of non-profit institutions including but not limited to, the University, colleges, schools and our hospitals because they, too, increase the supply of talented people who are consumers, and the institutions themselves consume enormous amounts of goods and services. They add additional intellectual value that often leads to private and public innovation.

We advocate for funding of essential infrastructure necessary to expand our economy - like broadband, highways, and business districts, etc. We want to live in a superb place, so we work with our partners in local government to secure quality of life features, in addition to the infrastructure and business climate that ensure we prosper.

My Waterloo Days announces 2010 dates, theme, sponsorship and volunteer opportunities
- March 1, 2010

The My Waterloo Days executive committee announced the dates and theme of the 2010 festival to be held Thursday through Sunday, June 3rd-6th. “Expo Excitement” has been selected as the theme, reflecting the utilization of the RiverLoop Expo Plaza in downtown Waterloo.

The 2010 executive committee has begun planning for “Expo Excitement.” The 2010 event will again include longtime community favorites such as: People in the Park, downtown parade, local and national musical acts, carnival midway, and the Family & Kids Activity area.

The committee is currently recruiting sponsorships for several high-exposure events, including the fireworks display. Without sponsorships from our local businesses, these events cannot occur, and sponsoring My Waterloo Days is an excellent marketing opportunity for area businesses. Sponsorships for My Waterloo Days enables the planning committee to seek a variety of entertainment and family fun for visitors to enjoy. All major sponsors will see their name and logo or slogan in lights at Lincoln Park and at the RiverLoop Expo Plaza on a 5’ x 7’ full-color, digital sign.

Once again there are fundraising opportunities available to local service groups, organizations and churches with clean up, ID validation and beer pouring. Groups can earn from as little as $40 to as much as $500 depending on the number of volunteers required. Slots for ID validation and beer pouring are in 3 hour shifts and clean-up projects are targeted at 1 hour.

As the committee continues to make progress and finalize plans for the 2010 festival, additional information such as entertainment and location specifics, will be released to keep the community well informed of what to expect in 2010. For more information on sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, call Jay Stoddard at the Greater Cedar Valley Chamber of Commerce at 319-233-8431.
